“Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus…” Philippians 2:5 (NASB)
Last time we looked at the motive for service. Today we see the attitude that should mark our service. Paul gives two contrasting statements (“not this, but this”) to highlight the attitude of service. They are as follows:
1) We are to, “not merely look to our own interests,” but rather, we are to, “also look to the interests of others” (v4).
2) We are to “do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit,” rather, “with humility,” we are to, “count others more significant than [ourselves]” (v3).
This is the attitude that Paul speaks of in verse 5, when exhorts us to have the attitude of Christ. Jesus is the One from whom we take all of our cues. We serve others with this attitude because this was the attitude of Jesus when he served us. And because He is our King and Savior, we are to have the same attitude as we serve others.
Father, open the eyes of our hearts so we might know this great Love that You have loved us with. Shape our lives, our hearts, our minds, and our attitude by it. And use us in this city to serve others the way that we have been served so that they might come to know Jesus too. In His name, Amen.
