“When Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.” John 13:1
Have you ever wondered how God could love you? When I have good days where everything is going well and the sun is shining and I feel good, strong and spiritual I tend to think that God’s love for me is there and real. But, on my bad days when I wake up late, am grumpy, and remembering all of the things I’ve done wrong and ways that I can be better I feel as if God’s love for me is shaky and fickle.
This text shows a very different kind of love that Jesus shows for those who are His. The disciples had been following Jesus for three years and they still did not understand what Jesus came to do. They were bickering over who would be the best among them and even in this scene Peter, the leader of the twelve, argues with Jesus about allowing Him to wash his feet. But that doesn’t dissuade Jesus from loving them to the end. Jesus knew what He came to do. He came to buy back a lost people at the cost of His blood. No one can earn this love. No one can be good enough for this love. No one can clean themselves up enough for this love.
No. This love is the cleaning agent itself. This love is what actually makes one good. This love is the means by which the one’s earning account is filled to the brim. So, do not turn away or disbelieve. Receive this love again today, or maybe for the first time. Jesus will love you until the end and His love will carry you through forever.
Thank You Jesus for Your great love for us. Help us to believe and to live in this love. Amen.
